Is It Cheaper to Restore Furniture or Buy New?
DIRECT ANSWER:
Sometimes restoration may cost less than replacing a piece with furniture of comparable construction and quality. In other situations, buying new may cost less. The useful comparison is not simply restoration cost versus the cheapest replacement—it is restoration versus the type and quality of furniture you would actually buy instead.
DON'T COMPARE A QUALITY OLD DINING TABLE TO THE CHEAPEST NEW TABLE ONLINE.
COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE.
START WITH THE REPLACEMENT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY BUY
Ask:
What size do I need?
What construction?
What material?
What quality?
What design?
What would delivery cost?
Would it fit the room?
THEN UNDERSTAND THE RESTORATION SCOPE
Does the existing piece need:
Structural repair?
Refinishing?
Veneer repair?
Missing components?
Minor repair?
A complete restoration?
QUALITY MATTERS
An inexpensive replacement may solve the immediate need.
That may be the correct decision.
But it is not necessarily comparable to restoring an older, well-constructed piece.
FIT MATTERS
Furniture may already:
Fit an unusual room.
Match existing pieces.
Work with the architecture.
Have the right dimensions.
Replacing it can create a new search problem.
SENTIMENTAL VALUE IS DIFFERENT
A new table cannot become the table your family already used for 50 years.
That does not establish monetary value.
It establishes a different kind of value.
WHEN BUYING NEW MAY MAKE MORE SENSE
Replacement may make sense when:
The existing piece is poor quality.
Damage is extensive.
It no longer fits the owner's needs.
A suitable replacement is readily available.
Restoration does not make practical sense.
