How Do You Remove Old Trim Without Destroying It?

DIRECT ANSWER:

Original trim should be documented before removal and handled carefully if reuse or replication may be important. Photograph each location, identify joints and transitions, label pieces as they come down and preserve representative profiles even when some material is damaged.

BEFORE THE PRY BAR COMES OUT—

TAKE THE PICTURES.

That piece of molding may look ordinary while it is on the wall.

Try finding an exact replacement after it is in the dumpster.

PHOTOGRAPH THE ENTIRE ROOM FIRST

Take photographs of:

Every wall

Doors

Windows

Corners

Ceiling transitions

Baseboards

Built-ins

Unusual details

THEN PHOTOGRAPH THE CONNECTIONS

The important information may be where pieces meet:

Inside corners

Outside corners

Door casing

Window casing

Baseboards

Plinth blocks

Crown molding

Paneling

LABEL MATERIAL DURING REMOVAL

A simple system can identify:

Room

Wall

Door

Window

Orientation

Sequence

SAVE DAMAGED PIECES TOO

A broken section may still preserve:

Profile

Width

Thickness

Material

Joinery

Finish information

It can become useful reference material.

DON'T ASSUME THE HOME CENTER HAS THE SAME PROFILE

Modern stock molding may be:

Narrower

Thinner

Different in profile

Different in proportion

The difference can become obvious where new and old meet.

BE CAREFUL WITH PAINTED OLD MATERIALS

Older painted surfaces may involve hazardous coatings.

Appropriate safety practices and applicable requirements should be followed when disturbing old paint.

Do not sand or create dust from unknown historic coatings casually.

BEFORE YOU REMOVE IT, LET US SEE IT.

Original doors, trim, molding, built-ins and architectural woodwork may be difficult to replace once they are gone. Send Lloyd's photos before making an irreversible decision.
