Why Is My Wood Table Cracking?

DIRECT ANSWER:

Wood tables can develop cracks or splits because wood naturally responds to changes in moisture. Construction, grain direction, indoor humidity, heating, direct heat sources, age and previous repairs can also contribute. A crack should be evaluated before simply filling or fastening it closed.

WOOD MOVES.

EVEN AFTER IT BECOMES A TABLE.

That movement is normal.

Problems can develop when the wood wants to move but the construction, environment or a previous repair prevents it from doing so properly.

WOOD RESPONDS TO MOISTURE

Wood generally gains and loses moisture as environmental conditions change.

That can result in dimensional movement.

In New England, seasonal indoor conditions can vary substantially between humid summers and heated winters.

WINTER CAN BE HARD ON WOOD

Indoor heating can reduce relative humidity.

Wood may lose moisture and contract.

Existing weaknesses may become more noticeable during dry conditions.

SUMMER CAN CREATE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT

Higher humidity can cause wood to gain moisture and expand.

That is one reason a crack or joint may appear different at different times of year.

HEAT SOURCES MATTER

Pay attention to furniture positioned near:

Radiators

Heating vents

Wood stoves

Fireplaces

Strong direct sunlight

Other concentrated heat sources

Localized conditions can affect wood differently from the rest of the room.

DON'T IMMEDIATELY FILL EVERY CRACK

If movement caused the crack, rigidly filling the opening without understanding the cause may not solve the underlying problem.

The repair must consider how the piece was constructed.

WHAT IF THE CRACK IS GETTING BIGGER?

Document it.

Take photographs.

Measure it if practical.

Note whether it changes seasonally.

A changing crack provides useful information.

IS THE TABLE UNSAFE?

A surface crack is different from failure in:

Legs

Base

Joinery

Structural supports

If the table appears unstable, stop loading or using it heavily until the structure can be evaluated.

Frequently asked questions

DOES A CRACK MEAN MY TABLE IS RUINED?

No. Repairability depends on the location, construction and extent of damage.

WHY DOES MY TABLE CRACK MORE IN WINTER?

Dry heated indoor conditions can contribute to wood contraction.

SHOULD I PUT WOOD FILLER IN THE CRACK?

Not before understanding why the crack developed.

CAN A SPLIT SOLID-WOOD TABLE BE REPAIRED?

Some splits can potentially be repaired depending on construction and condition.

NOT SURE IF IT CAN BE SAVED?

Start with photos.

  • One photo of the complete piece

  • Your location
