Why Is My Wood Chair Wobbling?
DIRECT ANSWER:
A wood chair may wobble because one or more joints have loosened, components are damaged, previous repairs have failed or the chair is uneven. Because chairs repeatedly support moving body weight, looseness should be addressed before continued use causes additional damage.
A WOBBLE IS A WARNING.
The chair is telling you something is moving that probably shouldn't be.
Ignoring it can turn:
Loose
into
Broken.
CHAIRS LIVE A HARD LIFE
Unlike many pieces of furniture, chairs repeatedly experience:
Weight
Movement
Leverage
Side loading
Dragging
Rocking
That makes joint condition especially important.
COMMON SOURCES OF MOVEMENT
Possible areas include:
Leg joints
Stretchers
Seat frame
Back joints
Arms
Previous repairs
Broken components
WHY MORE GLUE ISN'T ALWAYS THE ANSWER
Successful joint repair may require understanding:
Why it loosened
What adhesive is already present
Whether the joint is damaged
Whether wood is missing
Whether the components still fit correctly
WHAT ABOUT SCREWS?
A screw may stop movement temporarily in some situations.
But adding random fasteners can:
Split wood
Damage joinery
Complicate later repairs
Alter appearance
Do not assume reinforcement equals repair.
WHEN SHOULD I STOP USING THE CHAIR?
If the chair:
Moves substantially
Makes cracking sounds
Has a visibly split component
Has a loose leg
Feels unstable
stop using it until the problem is evaluated.
SAVE BROKEN PIECES
If something breaks:
Find the pieces.
Do not trim them.
Do not throw them away.
Label them if necessary.
Bring or photograph everything.
Frequently asked questions

SHOULD I KEEP USING A LOOSE CHAIR?
If structural stability is questionable, stop using it until evaluated.
CAN I JUST ADD MORE GLUE?
