Can a Broken Table Leg Be Repaired?
DIRECT ANSWER:
Many broken wood table legs may be repairable, but the correct approach depends on whether the failure occurred in the leg itself, at a joint, in the apron, at a mounting point or in a previously repaired area. Save all broken material and avoid continued use until the table is stable.
A BROKEN LEG DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN A BROKEN TABLE.
But how you handle it next matters.
WHERE DID IT BREAK?
A table leg can fail:
Through the leg
At the top
At a joint
Where it meets the apron
At a fastener
At a previous repair
The location changes the repair.
DON'T KEEP USING THE TABLE
A table supported unevenly can create additional damage elsewhere.
Remove weight from it and stabilize it safely until it can be evaluated.
SAVE THE BROKEN LEG
Also save:
Splinters
Blocks
Hardware
Fasteners
Decorative pieces
Do not clean up the break by cutting away material.
WHAT IF THE BREAK IS JAGGED?
A jagged break may look terrible.
But irregular broken surfaces may contain valuable mating material.
Do not sand them smooth before evaluation.
WHAT IF THE LEG IS MISSING?
If the original is unavailable, fabrication of a replacement may potentially be considered.

WHAT ABOUT PEDESTAL TABLES?
Pedestal and trestle tables distribute loads differently from four-legged tables.
Problems involving bases, feet, stretchers or central supports should be evaluated as structural systems.
Frequently asked questions
CAN A SNAPPED WOOD TABLE LEG BE FIXED?
Potentially. The break and construction need to be evaluated.
CAN A MISSING TABLE LEG BE RECREATED?
Potentially, especially when matching legs provide a usable reference.
SHOULD I USE SCREWS TO REATTACH A BROKEN LEG?
Not without understanding the original construction and failure.
IS A BROKEN PEDESTAL TABLE REPAIRABLE?
Some are. Pedestal construction should be evaluated as a complete system.
