What Should a Church Document Before Removing Its Pews?

DIRECT ANSWER:

Before removing pews, document the complete seating layout, row arrangement, pew dimensions, pew ends, hardware, floor attachment, kneelers, plaques, inscriptions and surrounding sanctuary conditions. Labeling and photography can make later restoration, modification or reinstallation much easier.

TAKE THE PHOTOS BEFORE THE FIRST PEW MOVES.

Once the room is empty, details that seemed obvious can become surprisingly hard to reconstruct.

PHOTOGRAPH THE ENTIRE SANCTUARY

Take wide photographs from:

Front

Rear

Center aisle

Side aisles

Balcony if applicable

Platform or altar area

PHOTOGRAPH EACH PEW TYPE

Some sanctuaries have different:

Lengths

Ends

Curves

Sections

Kneelers

Hardware

Do not assume every row is identical.

NUMBER OR LABEL THE PEWS

A simple identification system can preserve:

Row position

Left/right orientation

Sequence

DOCUMENT FLOOR ATTACHMENT

Photograph how pews meet the floor before removal.

This may matter later when flooring or reinstallation is planned.

DOCUMENT PLAQUES AND INSCRIPTIONS

Before removal, photograph:

Donor plaques

Memorial plates

Dedications

Numbers

Historic inscriptions

Other identifying details

SAVE HARDWARE

Keep removed hardware organized and labeled where practical.

Do not treat old fasteners, brackets or fittings as meaningless debris until their function is understood.
